Time Flies When You’re Mentoring: Sky’s Story So Far
When Sky first came across The Kids Network, it was the focus on child-led sessions that stood out. “Helping others, especially young people, is very important to me,” she explains. “So when I came across The Kids Network, I was delighted to see the amazing work they do to support children outside of school hours.”
The decision to become a mentor was easy. But the nerves still crept in before her first session. “Yes, I was nervous, but then I remembered that they could be just as nervous as me,” she says. That thought made all the difference. The moment they met, the atmosphere shifted. “As soon as we had the first meet session, the nerves turned to joy.”
What surprised Sky most was just how much she had in common with her mentee. It made the conversation flow and helped them build trust from the very beginning.
In just two months, Sky and her mentee have built a rhythm of their own. Their favourite way to spend time together – “Roller skating!”. “They usually roller skate and I ride my bike alongside.” It’s a simple routine, but one that brings joy, freedom, and connection, which we know are the building blocks of confidence.
One of Sky’s favourite moments so far came at the end of a mentoring session, after they’d shared some good food and laughter. As they were wrapping up, her mentee looked up and said, “Time always goes fast when you’re having fun.”
It’s a small sentence, but a powerful reminder of why mentoring matters. In just a short amount of time, Sky has become a consistent presence, someone her mentee can trust, talk to, and look forward to seeing.
And this is just the beginning.
At The Kids Network, mentoring is about the small moments that shape big futures. Sky is one of many volunteers helping children feel seen, supported, and inspired. Her story shows how even a couple of months can start to make a lasting difference.
